   FIFTY YEARS AGO

The fingers and brain go into slow-down mode when the 95 year mark is reached.   But sometimes a project must be finished. This story began half a century ago.

In 1972 The Alternate Safe World of Sanctuary was written as a Letter to the Editor.  The need of many became apparent and the letter grew to a book.

A town was built in the deserts of Arizona for anyone who needed help, a safe haven, with no questions asked. Evangeline rode a bus on a quest to find her lost son. Hurdles appeared and she climbed over them, sometimes slipping, but never losing sight of her goal.

I traveled to New York to publish. They told me, “We’re doing nonfiction this year.” The book went on the closet top shelf until 2013 when I published on Amazon and Kindle with modest success.

Evangeline stayed by my side. Several times the story began again – how would Sanctuary manage when the internet threatened its existence?

By chance I read an old book: Plague by Albert Camus.

And in 2022 I returned to Sanctuary. A deadly strain of Plague could be changing their lives.

How would Evangeline and her descendants handle disease, rebellion and the past when the front door slammed shut.  Would there be a Phoenix when the door opened? A follow-up story brings survival skills to the Arizona desert.

For ninety years, I’ve enjoyed waking up each morning with the next chapter of a story always there. The stories remain, but the body has run out of steam.
